As written by: RENA MAE CLARK MITCHELL; from letter dated February 20, 1991 - Rena Mae was born in Slaton, Texas on July 26, 1925, married Herbert Burette Mitchell July 29, 1941. They were divorced in 1952 and Rena married Donald* Dawson Henderson. They were divorced six months later and she and Herbert remarried. Herbert was a member of the First Baptist Church, BPOE Elks #1558, The AM FM #21 Masonic Lodge. He had lung trouble, had surgery on his shoulder from an industrial accident. His back was operated on from a car accident and he also had by-pass surgery on both legs about a year before he died. They lived together until Herbert died of a massive heart attack December 31, 1988 at Lancaster, California. His body was shipped to Carlsbad and was buried in the Carlsbad cemetery. He worked for US Potash (Borax) in Carlsbad and Lancaster for 48 years. He was a hoist man.
Rena worked for Safeway, Montgomery Wards, Horn Food Store, Clardy's Dairy and Jackson Drug. Rena kept books for Jackson Drug, was a service representative for Blue Cross and worked for the Welfare Department. In California she worked for the local bank and for Continental Telephone. Rena went to school in Slaton and Hobbs, New Mexico. She quit school to marry at age 16. She got her G.E.D Certification in 1966. She is a member of the First Baptist Church, Lambda Chi Omega Sorority and is Past Officer of the Order of the Eastern Star, The Does, Mother Advisory for the Order of the Rainbow Girls, LOVE ASSEMBLY for five years, President of the Junior Woman’s Club, President of the Boron Hospital Axillary. They moved to Boron, California December 25, 1967, and moved to Lancaster, California in 1976, and back to Carlsbad, New Mexico July 29, 1979. There were two children, Patricia Ann, and Ashleigh Rene, born of this marriage.
*Actual name was Gerald Dawson Henderson, per marriage certificate.
As written by Ashleigh Rene Mitchell; personal knowledge, August 16, 2000: Rena's second husband was named Gerald Dawson Henderson, not Donald. Rena and Herbert were married in Hobbs, NM with their parents in attendance, despite having told the tale of how they had "run off to Pecos, Texas to get married. The newspaper announcememnt of this even was found by Ashleigh Mitchell in 2018. Rena and Gerald were married in Yuma, Arizona. Their divorce papers, dated January 1, 1954 were from Juarez, Mexico, and I have been unable to locate a copy of them since first seeing them prior to 1967, I have also been unable to find any record of the remarriage to Herbert Mitchell, although not all Texas records are available online - and I was always told growing up that they had "run off to Pecos, Texas to get married." Imagine my surprise when I found the newspaper announcement of their wedding in Hobbs!
Following Herbert's death, Rena remained in Carlsbad for several years. She eventually moved back to Lancaster CA in order to be near Patricia. During her life, she had many artistic hobbies: ceramics, sculpting, and painting among them. She held several shows of her art while in Carlsbad, but after moving back to California, largely gave it up. While staying at Patricia’s home following foot surgery, Rena had a heart attack and passed away almost immediately. Her body was returned to Carlsbad, and she is buried next to Herbert in the Carlsbad Cemetery.
