PRISM Campaign – Garth Trygvisson
Garth Trygvisson was one of my favorite characters to play. I mean, what’s not to enjoy about a guy who suddenly becomes a cat? For life.
Born Feb. 2, 2054 in what was formerly Seattle, Washington, North America. Parents were Bio-Tech Chuan employees who were transferred to Western Europe shortly following Garth’s birth.
2060-2070 Upon his arrival in the European area, Garth was separated from his parents due to his extremely powerful psionic latency. He spent the next 10 years being studied and tested by B-T/Ch (pronounced: Bitch). At the onset of puberty, which was possibly enhanced due to the tinkering being done with his system, Garth’s latency exploded into a major telepathic awareness, rapidly becoming proficient in many Telepathic skills; however, he remained latent in all other areas at that time.
2071 At about age 17, Garth and several other experimental teens were taken to a platform in the North Atlantic for further tests. During transport, they engineered their escape with the assistance of a young, uncontrollable pyrokinetic named Charlene McGee (yes, she’s on loan from Stephen King, don’t let him know, please?) A small group of the teens managed to survive the frigid environment and make their way back to a populated area of Finland, where they began to hone their skills in an attempt to prevent their recapture.
2072-2081 Garth spent the next ten years in this area, working primarily with a telekinetic named Renée Phares, they became lovers and partners in a hijacking operation, redirecting goods and materials from B-T/Ch and other targets of opportunity as available, selling them on the black markets.
During one of these operations, Renée was killed while mind-linked to Garth; the shock stunned him so severely that he was unable to avoid recapture.
Finding himself once again in the clutches of his perennial enemy, Garth resolved to either escape or kill himself. He began looking for ways to manage either, while blocking his enhanced capabilities from detection.
2084 After three years of captivity and study, Garth had noticed that lab animals were rotated among several locations on a fairly regular schedule, and began tracking where the animals were going, with the intent of mind-controlling his transfer to another, less secure section.
On the chosen night, just as he was about to implant the needed suggestions, Bio-Tech Chuan‘s labs were raided. Fearing capture and dissection by one of Bitch’s rivals, he cast his mind out to a friendly receptacle, and found himself looking at the world through the eyes of a 6-week-old kitten!
This so startled him that he lost consciousness. When he came to, he was unable to return to his human body, as during the raid, which had been by agents of Prism, it was thought he was dead, and his body terminated in the following cleanup.
One of the Prism agents, however, had sensed the psi awareness of the stunned kitten, and had taken it with her.
Ruth Long, the PRISM agent, and he began a working partnership, with him relearning a number of primary skills that had gone into dormancy with the mind-switch (an ability he had never before attempted, and to this day, does not fully trust except in case of emergency). They worked together until her death on assignment in 2090, whereupon he went into seclusion as a PRISM operative until recently, when reactivated for a new Spectrum.
2092 Current status: active PRISM agent. Approximately 8-year-old male tabby cat. Trained Telepath, and latent/dormant in other psionic areas.
Garth was a lot of fun to play, I was never bored with the character, and it gave me a chance to play with my inner cat a bit. Around Year Two of the campaign, our Spectrum’s HQ was attacked, and during the fight, Garth used the mindswitch ability to take over one of the opponents. However, his cat body was killed, and so he was stuck in the new body – a strapping young Mormon boy of about 20. It took him a bit to get used to having to walk upright again, and still had a predilection for sleeping in inconvenient, high places, but he was adjusting to the new life.
Then the campaign ended.
